Leycesteria formosa (Nutmeg Tree)

Young stems are green and hollow except for the knotted leaf joints producing a vague resemblaance to bamboo. During the late summer small flowers are produced that quickly develop into drupes of purple berries surrounded by reddish bracts. The weight of these flowering-fruiting drupes quickly cause the stems to arch over making an attractive display. For this reason, leave plenty of space around the plant for the stems to splay without being impeded by adjoiniing bushes.
