Ceratostigma

Ceratostigma is predominantly southeast Asian in origin but does creep into tropical east Africa. The genus belongs to the family Plumbaginaceae to which obviously Plumbago belongs. It is sometimes described as the Hardy Plumbago. But here also belongs statice - the hosts of Limonium (350 species) which cover maritime and arid areas of the north hemisphere, and Armeria (100 species), the thrift or sea pinks, which are also mainly north hemisphere but do stretch down the Andes to the Magellan Straits of Chile in a similar distribution pattern to that of Ribes.
Ceratostigma consists of 8 species of which 5 are grown in gardens. The tender one is Ceratostigma abyssinicum from east and north-east Africa has, like the others, blue flowers and is shrubby with spine-tipped leaves. The other four species come from China and the Himalayas and have proved to be good, reasonably hardy shrubs.
