Clematis

Clematis like well-drained, preferably akaline soil and should be planted much deeper than the pot surface. Most varieties are best shaded at the root, either with a mulch of leafmould or gravel chippings. The vigour of the plant is helped by the addition of bonemeal, rotted stable manure, or other organic fertiliser lightly forked into the surface in spring. Care must be taken not to damage the delicate stems at the base.

Clematis Jackmanii Superba Dark Purple

Product: Clematis 'Jackmanii Superba' in a 2 Litre Pot with 60cm of growth above pot, tied into cane.

Description: Jackmanii Superba' is probably one of the most popular large-flowered, late-flowering clematis. The rich dark purple flowers are like velvet, and make are a wonderful sight, clothing walls from mid- to late summer. As with all the late-flowering clematis, pruning is easy. Simply cut back the stems to a pair of strong buds 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground level before growth begins in early spring. This pruning technique makes late-flowering clematis useful for training into shrubs, trees and climbing roses as the clematis growth is removed each spring and so never becomes too much of a burden on its supporting plant.

Planting:Soak the rootball before planting. Plant a hole twice the diameter of the rootball or pot. Mix an organic soil improver and general fertiliser with the infill soil. Plant 45cm (18in) away from walls and trees. Water regularly until established.

Plant Care: Frost Hardy. Flowers on previous years growth. cut back all stems to a pair of strong buds in early spring.

Supplied as a pot grown plant.

Position: Full sun to very light shade on a wide range of soils except extremely dry.

Height now: 60cm above pot, tied into cane.

Clematis 'Elsa Spath' Violet Blue

Product: Clematis 'Elsa Spath' in a 2 Litre Pot with 60cm of growth above pot, tied into cane.

Description: Raised in Berlin in 1891 'Elsa Spath' still holds its own among modern varieties. It is free-flowering, producing mid-blue blooms with deep red anthers over a long period from late spring to early autumn. To prune, remove any dead or weak stems in late winter or early spring and cut remaining stems back to the highest pair of strong-growing buds. To encourage blooms to cover the whole plant, train the stems so that they are evenly spaced on their support. As new growth appears in mid-spring, train this to fill any gaps.

Planting:Soak the rootball before planting. Plant a hole twice the diameter of the rootball or pot. Mix an organic soil improver and general fertiliser with the infill soil. Plant 45cm (18in) away from walls and trees. Water regularly until established.
